Narcissa takes a bow

A reader sends along photographs of Bishop Clark's "installation" Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes parish for his newly appointed pastoral administrator Sr. Joan Sobala, a vocal proponent of women's ordination who has been spotted wearing a crucifix with a female corpus. The "cluster" over which she presides includes St. Anne parish, hitherto an oasis of relative sanity. Do read the captions and commentary that accompany each photo. At this point it seems clear that Clark and his allies are pursuing a scorched earth policy for his remaining four years in the Diocese of Rochester. Keep Rome informed, Rochester readers. At the very least you'll minimize the chance that the Vatican will take a flyer on Clark's successor.

My reader also sends video footage. The sheer goofiness of the celebration is remarkable. Take a look at the hand-clapping Gospel pantomime:

Part II, in which Sobala thanks and embraces her staff in some sort of receiving line, is here:

Note to anyone contemplating a letter to Rome:

If any of you are writing about hand-clapping at Mass, be prepared to be disappointed. While it's silly, it's not exactly the sort of thing that is going to get anyone's attention given how common it is everywhere.

Writing about a specially themed Mass in which the bishop "installs" an alb-wearing dissident nun as the effective pastor over several parishes -- now that's an attention grabber.

Please, next time you post a video like this, I beg of you - warn people to not view prior to dinner (or immediately following, for that matter).

My offer remains: for those on the southwest section of Monroe county, come to the Diocese of Buffalo and worship - Our Lady of Mercy parish is right off 490 and Thruway exit 47.

For some reason I am getting a blank white box with a red X in the corner. When I click the red X, I get the message that SSA restricts access, because the site contains hate speech or sex or gambling....

I understand a single word misconstrued by a computer can set this off. When I go home, I will have to see if I can figure out what triggered it.

What did we do to deserve 29 years of this man?

I forgot to ask and don't recall it being listed on your blog - IF someone were to write to Rome in regard to the liturgical abuses and outright heretical things taking place within a certain diocese, where and to whom would the letter be addressed? ;)

Is Rome really going to do anything? I mean he's been here for 29 years. Outside of bad health, is there any precedent that the Pope will do anything about Bishop Clark? This is the trap of "collegiality." When some one is obviously a dud or worse, it is real difficult to get rid of him.

Rich Leonardi said...

Like I wrote, Tom, it will reveal the extent of the damage and may thereby limit the risk of a bad successor.

Susan, it is probably blocked because it is a You Tube link. I don't know what SSA is, but if it is some kind of access control (parental), you tube is probably coded that way in the database it checks websites against.

Since Rome won't allow him to ordain Sr. Joan, perhaps this is her consolation prize from the bishop?

I really can't beleive that this is going on. With ordained priests and deacons within the cluster, why on earth is Sr. Joan being 'installed' as the pastoral administrator? Does not one of the 5 ordained qualify to be a leader? Something fishy is going on and sooner or later, the truth will be discovered. God please help the DOR.

And what is with the white, priest-like alb she is wearing? It makes her look even more like a seminarian being ordained! This is sickening --- and seemingly so unnecessary with five priests and/or deacons who could surely serve in a leadership capacity! How disheartening ---- I feel nothing bud sadness for the Roman Catholics in this "cluster."

A letter has been sent, along with much documentation of her liturgical errors.

I was told by a friend that attendance at the 9:00 Mass at St. Anne was, one week, down to 70. When I was there, it was common to have about 200 or 300 people there easily.

I'm a new Catholic (Easter Vigil 2008) in the DOR. My parish is a clustered one with a deacon as pastoral administrator. The parish has been in an uproar for several years and it's not getting any better. Liturgical abuses of the mass abound in our little parish. It's a petty fiefdom here and the scramble to grab and maintain power is quite a sideshow. The parish staff are power mad, the priests are treated like pawns and manipulated, and the parish loses out.

Kit said...

Hmmm. Were the prayer cards laminated with an image of her on the other side wearing her lady crucifix and lavalier microphone?

I emailed links to the photos to the Nuncio and to the Vatican last night.

P.S. Trad Tom: the one time I had the misfortune of attending a Mass where she was the guest homilist, she processed in with her alb AND a stole - so I thought she was a little under-dressed (for HER, anyway)

A big thank you goes out to the wonderful parishioners in our Diocese who photographed and video taped and to Rich Leonardi for exposing this on his web site and You Tube. Let the world see the destruction of the Diocese of Rochester.

Shame on Pope Benedict and the Vatican for not forcing Bishop Clark into early retirement. 29 years is too long for one leader. The waters in the Diocese of Rochester are stagnant.

Bishop Clark only has about 1395 days until we can say "bye-bye" to him and his entourage of actresses.

what is so "sickening" as so many of you put it about a woman stepping up to her call to lead in the Church? What is so inherently deficit about the female sex that makes them unable to lead?

Recall Jesus' treatment of women in the Gospels. Your attitude toward women sickens me.

In Christ there is no Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male and female

japhy said...

Joel: What is so inherently deficit about the female sex that makes them unable to lead?

This has nothing to do with leadership, this has to do with a woman who is misguided and thinks she's getting closer to being an ordained Catholic priest. She has a "Jesus was a woman" ideology.

Recall Jesus' treatment of women in the Gospels.

Yes, he treated them with dignity. He did not indulge their fantasies and make-believe. He did not choose them to be among his twelve Apostles... not even his own mother! He showed that men and women can be equals without being identical.

In Christ there is no Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male and female

Taken out of context. Does this mean that in Christ, homosexual sex is legitimate? But in the beginning, God created us MALE AND FEMALE, and it was GOOD.

Paul is speaking about baptism: there are NO barriers to Christ's covenant, because all can be baptized. That was Good News indeed to the slaves and Gentiles and eunuchs and women of his time, who were lesser (or not-at-all) members of a covenant which was entered by male circumcision.

Joel:

Real women know their place in society. They don't shove themselves down peoples throats and expect to win friends and influence people by being blastphemous and arrogant. They don't verbally abuse people into submission, and expect them to become endeared to them, anyway. And they certainly don't verbally and emotionally abuse a child, who has received "the calling" into fleeing from his home parish with the little bit of dignity that he managed to scrape together.

There are many things you obviously don't know about the illustrious Joan Sobala.
Within the diocese of Rochester, there are many women Pastoral administrators. They are functioning well, and respecting the various roles of the people in stewardship in their respective parishes. None of them are in such an irreverant state as is Joan Sobala. It isn't that she is a woman. It is simply that she is an egomanic who is into tyranny and beligerance, with an in-your-face-attitude instead of possessing a charitable heart and an open mind when it comes to the needs of a parish that was once so dignified and so sough after in the diocese of Rocheser. Now, it is a laughing stock.
Punching the computer screen won't help. But, punching in those numbers to call the Nuncio will.
If we all call and jam up the lines, they will get the idea. Soon enough, no less.

From a canonical point of view, the role of pastoral administrator as it exists in Rochester, i.e., a lay or non-ordained person presiding over a parish or group of parishes on a permanent or long-term basis, is of dubious legality. So in reality Sr. Joan's "irreverant state," glaring though it is, is only part of the problem.

Brighton-area parishes cluster

(Publication Date: 08-01-2008)

By Amy Kotlarz/Catholic Courier

Two two-parish clusters -- one fairly homogenous, the other dissimilar in style and population -- have formed in Brighton and the southern tip of the City of Rochester, and plans are being made for parishioners to get to know each other through joint activities.

Each cluster is now sharing a pastoral leader and the services of one of more priests.
Our Lady of Lourdes/St. Anne

Staff members of the new Our Lady of Lourdes/St. Anne cluster say the parishes' differences are many, which is why they intend to build ongoing relationships carefully between the two churches.

Sister of St. Joseph Joan Sobala, the new cluster's pastoral administrator, noted that many parishioners of St. Anne, which is on Mt. Hope Avenue near the University of Rochester, are longtime neighbors, university students and their families, and people who value classical music and liturgy. The city parish also is home to a Korean ministry.

One of Our Lady of Lourdes' hallmarks, on the other hand, is its growing number of young families who have moved from the city into the Brighton neighborhood where the church and Seton Catholic School are located, Sister Sobala said. Liturgically and musically, Our Lady of Lourdes tends to be more contemporary, she said.

The parishes are not expected to blend their styles, she noted.

"A blend is an imposition of parts of one style," Sister Sobala said. "I would more describe what we’re expecting and hoping for as some sort of an evolution of relationship. As the relationship between the parishes and communities evolves, there’ll be some new understandings and ways of doing things."

In addition to Sister Sobala, the staff for the new cluster comprises Father Gary Tyman, who has become its sacramental minister after serving as pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Greece, and Rob Layer, faith-formation director, and a youth minister to be hired. Deacon David Hudzinski and retired priests Fathers John Lynch and James Lawlor are helping each parish maintain three weekend Masses.

Father Tyman said he has been impressed by the dedication of many parishioners.

"Overall, my impression has been getting to meet some very fine people in both parishes," he said. "There are people concerned about their parishes because they are in a time of transition, and they want to keep their parishes together and keep them vibrant."

Sister Sobala said members of both parishes have been extremely gracious and welcoming.

"People seem to realize we have a large task before us, and they are being wonderfully cooperative," Sister Sobala said. "I’m grateful for that."

She said the cluster's staff members are setting up an office at Our Lady of Lourdes' rectory, and she and Father Tyman also will have office space at St. Anne. Each parish maintains separate office staff to handle operations, she said, noting that staff members have taken part in joint meetings and development opportunities. The cluster staff also is planning an open house for the cluster office.

The cluster plans to mark its formation with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Matthew H. Clark at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 14 at Our Lady of Lourdes, 150 Varinna Drive. Following the Mass, all will be invited to a noon concert at St. Anne, 1600 Mt. Hope Ave., followed by a reception that will run until 2 p.m.

IS THIS A PACK OF LIES? OR WHAT?

Anonymous said...

Yes, there are lies. Sobala only speaks for herself and does not listen to others! Fr. Tyman is just merely "bowing" to her, Fr. Tyman where is your own dignity? Roberta, are you now sobala's little disciple? Off course Fr. Lawlor they are in the same boat! Poor Fr. Lynch witnessing all these unbecoming of catholic liturgical celebrations.

Kit said...

Look very carefully at her own words in the parish bulletins and on the prayer card she undoubtedly authored for herself. She refers to herself as the "pastoral LEADER" of the cluster, not the "pastoral administrator."

The difference in semantics is not negligible, nor is it unintentional. Priests are the spiritual LEADERS of a parish, not nuns, because of that intractable Y chromosome enabling them, uniquely, to stand "in persona Christi." The priest is the shepherd of his flock (as is the Bishop, but let's not go there right now).

Joan and any other female similarly situated in the pastoral ADMINISTRATOR role are intended solely to handle the day-to-day business of running the parish - planning events, making sure the facilities and grounds are properly maintained, handling HR and PR. NOT "installing" themselves as the LEADER of the parish. The intent of the position is to lessen the practical burden on the ever-shrinking number of priests who are expected to serve and maintain as many as 4-5 parishes in a "cluster."

The Bishop is ratifying and condoning this woman's hubris and wrongful takeover of BOTH roles within this cluster. It is shameful.

And, Joel, to those of us women who are confident enough in our femininity to let men do their jobs while we do ours, it really is "sickening" to watch this farce taking place.

"Sister" Joan Sobala is a Sister of St. Joseph. There was a nice article in the Catholic Courier or Democrat and Chronicle newspaper about local billionaire Tom Golisano stopping to have coffee and fresh baked cookies at a convent in the morning. I wonder if this was the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse?

If it is the Sisters of St. Joseph, maybe it is time for a letter to go to Mr. Golisano and bring this to his attention. The best place to hit the Sisters of St. Joseph is right in the pocketbook. It the fastest way to get their attention.

And don't forget to boycott Bishop Clark's Catholic Ministries Appeal. Don't worry, you won't hurt your parish by not donating your hard earned money. Bishop Clark already has the list of parishes that he is going to close. Follow the money trail. Bishop Clark will make the money from the sale of the buildings disappear.

Pope Benedict realizes that change will have to come slowly and by his example. Many priests and bishops have begun to follow his example, but it will take time.
What is left over from the misinterpretation of Vatican II is slowly going away, but it is taking a lot longer in the Diocese of Rochester just because of the long pastorate of Bishop Clark.
Oh yeah, please don't be too critical of Pope Benedict. He is a great pope, as was John Paul II. Pope Benedict definitely sees the bigger picture.

Pastoral "Leader" or pastoral "administrator" - makes no difference. These women are in charge. I had a meeting at St. Thomas More with Margaret. She made it clear that her job is the same as a pastor's except that she can't say mass. Her comment was - "they do the sacraments but I do everything else. I'm in charge and this is MY parish." I wanted to throw up. My wife and I left the parish when we heard this. We have friends down at St. Mary's. They left there after the woman Pastoral Administrator there fired Sister Jonathan and Richard Wolf. Our friends are actually quite liberal Catholics but they said they just couldn't take it anymore, that this woman was worse than any priest could think of. I worry so much about what is going on with the church.

We miss our friends at Thomas More, but we just couldn't take it - and won't put up with Margaret's preacing.

japhy said...

They need to read Ecclesia de Mysterio. Or else be forced to watch it, Clockwork Orange-style.

JP said...

The problems with lay Pastoral Leaders is that the priest becomes nothing more than an employee. The parish itself would be run and managed entirely by this lay person. The role of the priest has been much more than just a dispenser of sacrements (and don't think for one minute that the Pastoral Associates will not eventually demand this function as well).

What I find interesting in that the Bishops who fully support this new function see no threat to thier own authority. If they don't think this is a possibility they are only deluding themselves.

If parishes cannot produce a priest every generation (for most parishes it has been 2 or 3), the parishes should be closed.

Nerina said...

WOW! Those pictures do tell a story. And the sanctuary at OLoL is about the most un-sacred I've seen. Bishop Clark's vestments leave much to be desired and I can't believe any parishioners will remain under the leadership of this woman. There is no way I'd stay! As Rich has said many times, vote with your feet - go to OLV.

With each new installation of a "pastoral administrator" the role of the priest as "Father" and "shepherd" will be diminished. One day, the priest will only be seen as a sacramental pez dispenser. Truly, how long must this go on?

CPT Tom said...

Nothing like sticking it to a whole church and its parishioners(St. Anne).

I guess their traditions and style of worship was not welcomed at the OLoL jamboree.

The fact that the installation mass was held at OLoL sends a clear message to St. Anne parishioners. That is, our way or the highway.

Something that makes me cringe (and, to some extent, grieve,) is the fact that one person, one selfish "child of God," can destroy so much happiness in so many people.

Sr. Roberta, how can you betray the trust of those who used to be considered your friends? Are you now so unwilling to fight for them because of the chance for your own personal gain? That, Roberta, is cowardice. You will soon find yourself alone. I think, judging by the numerous "help wanted" notices in your bulletin, the day may have already arrived? You want to know why you have a volunteer shortage, even the priest shortage? Because of Joan and her cohorts who show my generation that we are not needed, nor are we wanted.

The picture of Sister Joan Sobala and Sister Mary Ann Binsack with Bishop Clark is so funny. I couldn't stop laughing and intend to circulate this picture.

Sorry, but I have to ask the question, Why do the Nuns look like men?

OK, one last question. At one time several years ago, I think that the Vatican called homosexuality a "mental defect". Have you ever seen this in print. I would like to have a copy of it so that I can quote the statement.

Sister Joan and Sister Mary Ann are the poster children for the Diocese of Rochester. These wanabe men were born women and will never become a Catholic Priest in their lifetime.

Sorry Bishop Clark, nice try, but your 29 years of trying just got flushed down the toilet and all of your work was in vain.

Mike said...

Anon. 7:46,

I have never seen homosexuality referred to as a "mental defect" by the Church.

The CCC, however, terms homosexual acts "intrinsically disordered" (#2357) and homosexual tendencies "objectively disordered" (#2358).

Disordered is here used in its theological sense; i.e., contrary to nature or contrary to God's purpose within nature.

This has all been very interesting, and I’ll admit that I’ve checked this particular blog entry at least twice a day these past few days chuckling to myself. However, when I went to Mass this morning, the Reading hit me right between the eyes. I guess I'll have to admit, at least for myself, this is becoming an “Opps!”
Today’s readings (in part):

If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.

And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated,

it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,

it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.

It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

...So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Father Schnippel said...

New Anon:

Certainly, we are called to love, as St. Paul challenges.

However, True Love should also stir the passion that when we see something that is so detrimental to that which we love (the faith), we are moved to act in protection of the beloved. Highlighting these grevious errors is a response in love.

As far as vocations go in this diocese, there are are plenty of vocations in the Rochester diocese. They just end up being ordained for religious orders or other diocese.

Two examples. The first being the widower from Victor who was ordained to the priesthood for the Buffalo diocese, because this diocese doesn't take men over 50 for priestly formation. This diocese told him to apply for the diaconate. I guess P.A.'s are exempt from this age requirement.

The second being a young man from the Wayland/Cohocton area who was ordained for the "gasp" Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. So there are two that ended up someplace else. But more importantly, there are men in this diocese willing to serve but don't want to put up, dare I say, the BS in this diocese.

Mr. WAC said...

This canonical model (with a technical "pastor" whose administrative functions are delegated to a layperson) was created for use on the frontiers of Christendom.

So, that means either the Bishop is abusing the law, or that Rochester is on the fringe of our mission territory.

Or both, perhaps.

Pope Benedict has "corrected" Bishop Matthew Clark many times and is aware of the bad situation in the Diocese of Rochester. There is a file cabinet full of letters of complaint, pictures, video, copies of letters sent by email and fax. Now is the time to post everything on the Internet for the world to see.

We have called Bishop Clark's credibility into question. We know that he is no longer capable to lead our diocese. The documentation continues to be mailed to the Vatican. Now it is time for Pope Benedict to correct a very bad situation and ask for Bishop Clark's retirement.

What bothers me is the fact that the Vatican looked the other way and failed to protect the children in our diocese, as they were being sexually abused, under the watch of Bishop Clark. I am very sorry to some of the Catholics who may not want to hear this, but if Pope Benedict fails to retire Clark soon, then the Pope's credibility has to be questioned.

What kind of a Catholic man would look the other way, while children were being sexually abused?

The parishioners in the Diocese of Rochester are being chased away from their own Church. Maybe the Internet is the Lord's answer to our prayers. We have to save our precious Church.

While searching through the blog site..."Catholic blogs" I ran across this question in one of the "comment" sections:

"I don't understand. This woman has said she wants to be a priest, right? Out loud and in interviews. So why is she in charge of any parish, anywhere?"

My sentiments exactly.

Interesting bulletin, Dr. K. Her reflections on her feelings about how her coronation/investiture/installment went are enough to make me lose my lunch. SO all about Joan and the Bishop's legitimization of all she stands for.

Also noteworthy is the announcement of the liturgical ministry training (given by a lady liturgist), and the indication that it is geared toward OLOL folks - the more liberal of the two parishes - but the St. Anne people can come and get a feel for how they like things done. (Clockwork Orange, anyone, or is that just me?) All in the name of "discerning" how they might fit in. Gag me! Those poor St. Anne parishioners.

last but certainly not least, did anyone else notice how, on this BIG celebration weekend, the collection was substantially lower than stated in recent past bulletins?

Hmmmmm....maybe she should reflect on THAT.

May be her words can be posted so that others can read. I always say the "Sobalacentric" attitude, "I, I, I," where is her humility?

Saint Anne parishioners who are no longer at the parish, keep on visiting this blog. We need to keep beloved Saint Anne alive.

Regarding the post from 'Anonymous' at 8:09am, I would love to see some of the documentation from Rome posted on the web somewhere. The stuff going on in the DOR cannot be acceptable to Rome and perhaps if a website started organizing letters from Rome, along with photos, videos of Sobola's masses, this could gain more traction.

Hopefully Dr. K could assist in getting this data collected and organized on the web. May God Bless the parishoners of St. Annes and LoL that they may make it through these tumultuous and 'liturgically incorrect' times.

Well, Joan and Matthew do vacation together. I don't know when the last time was, but I spoke with Bishop Clark personally, and he said he had been to Rome with Joan.

The Rosary for Vocations was very well done. How odd (and refreshing) it was to see the exiled back in their rightful places. And, David, take heart. You looked smashing in your cassock ;-) It's the way things ought to be. Nice "thurifer-ing" too. It's been too long since you've made holy smoke in St. Anne's lol.

Oh come on!!!! I have been to a convention with my boss and believe me it was no vacation. We don't need to invent things about this situation it is bad enough on its own.

David mcqcomrade is right. You have so much grace about you.

A rumor is floating that an usher at St. Anne has been instructed to confiscate Dr. K's camera if he is seen videotaping Sr. Joan this Sunday. I personally hope it happens, since it is quite obvious that Dr. K is a coward who is afraid to use his real name and finds it necessary to hide behind a camera lens. He is obviously an insecure person who hates women.

No...he is obviously a man who has to collect enough evidence in order to get the people who are in command to listen. Without real proof of liturgical abuse, it can not be founded. All of the people who blog here, that are in defense of Sister Joan are just timid. You won't go to hell for standing up for what you KNOW is right and just. It is NOT right and just to avoid issues that are in your own faces. Joan is no more a SISTER than I or anyone else is. So don't honor her with that title. She is a self absorbed he/she, who needs to find her own place in the sun. Unfortunately she is going to abusive extremes to prove herself. Furthermore....at the last nformational meeting at Saint Anne's when there was supposed to be a question/answer period....it was put to the congregation attending that no question would be answered unless names were included on the question sheets, themselves. When the questions were read out loud....no mention was made of anyone's names. Obviously, the names were to be included so that Joan the Terrible could compile a nice, neat little list of people who were ON to her.....Do you understand NOW why Dr. K. has to remain anonymous?

OMG, Saint Anne is using an usher to get Dr. K'camera. As I have seen most of those ushers are gentle and kind, unless they are just following the "blind order" of Sobala.
This can be very funny, ushers are busy now at Saint Anne trying to "catch" Dr. K's camera.

I'd say she should use the altar servers I trained, but, alas, there are none!

Let us pray that Dr. K gets help for his mental illness.

As a psychologist, I need to warn people about the profile Dr. K. seems to fit. He is afraid to use his real name, he hides behind male authority figures in the church, and he bashes women (perhaps because he has a domineering mother). I believe the last time such a person was portrayed in a movie it was Norman Bates in Psycho.

May God save your soul, Mr. Grosswirth. I know you have been out to get me because I have been critical of your dear friend who preached at your wedding, but I am not going to take your bait. How do I know it's you? Well for one thing, every one of these posts which attack me are anonymous (and you are a known hypocrite, so the hypocritical nature of an anonymous poster criticizing a person posting anonymously fits you like a bill), and each post seems to carry content similar to those found in your videos on your YouTube site. Examples include the post where you attacked Kit and you mention a random Canon Lawyer who you also happen to mention in one of your videos where you attack Arch. Burke, and how you constantly refer to me as a sexist and make comments on how I do not use my real name (by the way, you don't know what the K stands for, perhaps it is my real initial...), which are two other items also found in your videos ("Sexism in the Roman Catholic Church" and "In Defense of Sr. Joan Sobala"). Also, the fact that you mentioned Mr. Leonardi's blog in one of your rant videos proves that you are a reader of this page.

What kind of "priest" acts like this? An illicit one.

~Dr. K

I don't think it is Mr. Grosswirth, whoever that is. It is probably Fr. Mike who has attacked Dr. K previously at other sites.

My advice to Rich Leonardi is to disallow anonymous postings. This would force Dr. K to come out of the shadows. My guess is that if he had to reveal his true identity, he would disappear into the shadows. The fact that he stalks a nun with a camera and posts her phots on his photobucket site is both sick and disgusting.

Thanks anon 1:52, I corrected the mistake. It was in fact a different church that I was thinking of. I have offered Fr. G an apology and removed that post which was made this past April. Thanks for the catch, I may never have noticed this if you hadn't pointed it out.
