I found the juxtaposition of the front-page headline "Church lists banned touches" with the Your Voice column "Some moral principles are 'not negotiable' " (Aug. 11) highly ironic. The columnist is urging everyone to follow Catholic dogma in politics (what happened to separation of church and state?) at the same time that the church is having to spell out behavior to quell the numerous child abuse charges that have been leveled against it. The continued hypocrisy is disturbing.

Ah, our favorite ad hominem at work.
Yep. At this point you wonder how persuasive it still is, if it ever was.
Rich, I thought you were urging Catholics to follow Catholic dogma? Whatever happened to free speech and the free practice of religion, two rights actually spelled out in the Constitution?
jonathan, i guess you think because a catholic practices his religion he should just keep his mouth shut? i think the majority of people assumed that the Catholic church would disappear after the sex abuse scandal and when that didn't happen there was a lot of rage on the left.
Cordelia,
Maybe my I didn't come accross correctly, but actually I was trying to say the exact opposite (i.e., there is absolutely nothing wrong with what Rich wrote). Specifically, I was trying to rebut the "what happened to separation of church and state?" comment. I think the Church has clearly laid out 5 non-negotiables that are universal truths, not just religous truths, and as Catholics we have an obligation to speak out about those truths (i.e., use our freedom of speech and religion).
oh, sorry... for making assumptions, you know what they say about assuming...guess that's what i get for being a fly off the handle flame thrower.
